“One of the most deftly accomplished minimal pieces I´ve heard.” Stephen Fruitman, sonomu.net

We have recently received a really touching and great review from the equally great Stephen Fruitman over at sonomu.net. He was kind enough to let us use his review on moize.net, but please do go over to sonomu.net to read through his other great reviews.

Thank you Stephen.

“An attempt to portray that special moment when you gaze out toward the horizon and the sea is so still its surface cannot be distinguished from the sky. The gentle quiet of this piece is profound. It´s so docile that it is hard to believe there are two musicians at work here – Martin Thompson and Lucia H. Chung. It seems more as if their collaboration consisted of them holding hands while listening themselves to this sound and sharing the experience with us, rather than actually creating it.

But create it they did indeed, apparently by picking up on the frequencies of a small collection of seashells. What they are attempting is to offer a clean canvas upon which to listen to the other sounds in the room, those we might not hear other than when we are already engaged in an act of listening. In other words, music to encourage us to listen to the ”music” abounding in daily life that we otherwise dismiss as unworthy of our attention.

The Japanese word from which the piece takes its name appears to mean “refine”, but also honesty, integrity, purity.

One of the most deftly accomplished minimal pieces I´ve heard.”
