Minimal Art & Minimal Music

I recently read a very interesting thesis written by Christian Schrei, a student of Information Design at the University of Applied Sciences Graz, Austria. The paper entitled simply ‘Minimal’, contemplates some similarities and differences between Minimal Art and Minimal Music and does so by comparing various techniques and known artists.

Each chapter (accompanied by minimal designs) is organized into the sections: Reduction, Repetition, Mathematical LogicObject Orientation And Perspective and finally Meditative Effect.

‘Minimal’ is a quick read and so should be considered more an overview than an in depth study, but despite this it still manages to provide clear and concise information for anyone interested in minimalism. Within this paper you can expect the mention of works from the many great names of minimalism, such as: Donald Judd, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Sol LeWitt, to name a few. The thesis ‘Minimal’ is written in both English and German and is available to read online or to download as a pdf.
